Light Awakens: Small Folk Learning Series Late Winter Unit
“Light Awakens” is the sixth unit of the Small Folk Learning Series: an early years homeschool curriculum for children 3-5 inspired by the Charlotte Mason, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia Philosophies. Through a gentle holistic approach, early math, literacy, science, and nature studies are all integrated.
This unit focuses on the changes around us as the earth prepares for spring, with a particular emphasis on the lengthening days and light and shadow. Relationships (both within the natural world, and the ones we have with eachother as people) is also a major theme of this unit, including but not limited to, love, friendship and community. It builds on the previous units in the series and together with the previous two units, makes up the winter portion of the curriculum.
Several early learning concepts are integrated into the activities, including counting andmeasurment and measuring tools, shapes, maps, print awareness, the direction of reading, storytelling and sequencing, and the sound of the letter V.
